Even though we are doing well as a small country, we should never get complacent. There are many other countries who are doing better than us. Furthermore, even though we might be the best in a certain area currently, there will always be people who will do even better in the future. As we improve, we have to remember that other counties are improving too. When we get complacent, we tend to be careless and that is when mistakes might even occur. We should be happy about the achievements we get but we should never get overly complacent just because we did the best in a certain area.
For example, Singapore handled 33.9 million 20-foot containers last year, according to a statement posted on the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore’s website dated Jan. 16. Last month, Shanghai said it expects to process about 35.2 million boxes in 2014. A year before, the gap between the two ports was only about 1 million boxes. (Source: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-01-19/shanghai-widens-lead-over-singapore-as-world-s-busiest-box-port) In only a year, Shanghai widened the gap between Singapore by 2 times! This shows how fast a country can actually improve. Thus we should never be complacent and instead, strive to improve ourselves even further.
